Bloomberg On McCain’s ‘Short List’ For Running Mate

Just more proof this is the election cycle from hell…

Newsmax:

With speculation swirling about presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain’s choice for running mate, a surprising name has popped into the discussion — New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

When McCain had breakfast with Bloomberg recently in Manhattan, a McCain spokesman told the New York Post that “discussing a vice-presidential slot for Bloomberg was not on the agenda.”

But a source close to the mayor told John Heilemann of New York magazine that the topic was definitely part of the conversation.

“One of the participants, in fact, came away from the conversation under the distinct impression that Bloomberg is on McCain’s short list,” Heilemann wrote.

The Democrat turned Republican turned Independent could aid the McCain campaign in a number of ways come November, according to Heilemann:

For one thing, billionaire Bloomberg’s entrepreneurial background could serve to counter McCain’s admitted shortcomings regarding economics.

Republicans are “losing on the economy by 10 to 15 points,” said Doug Schoen, Bloomberg’s pollster during his mayoral campaigns. “With Mike on the ticket, that gap would quickly, dramatically close.”

As a Jew, Bloomberg could strengthen McCain in several critical swing states with sizeable Jewish populations, including Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Bloomberg would enhance McCain’s image as a moderate, and help distance him from the policies of an unpopular president as Democrats seek to portray the Senator as a George Bush clone, Schoen maintains.
“The Republican brand is dead, at least for this election,” Schoen said. “McCain needs to go outside the box, and that’s where Mike lives.”

Perhaps most importantly, Bloomberg could provide McCain with a huge financial boost if he were willing to spend part of his fortune on the campaign.
“Mike Bloomberg spent $83 million in a re-election simply in New York City,” New York Deputy Mayor Kevin Sheekey told an interviewer. If he were the V.P. candidate, the figure would be “between zero and a billion [dollars].”

But there is one eventuality that could torpedo any McCain effort to land Bloomberg as his running mate — an overture to the mayor to run as the vice presidential candidate along with the likely Democratic candidate, Barack Obama.

According to Heilemann, Obama also had breakfast recently with Bloomberg, and even showed him an important economic speech before he delivered it.

A member of Bloomberg’s inner circle said that Bloomberg and Obama reps held a meeting in April, Heilemann reported, “to discuss the former’s suitability to being the latter’s No. 2.”

  4. Goodbye Natalie

If McCain chooses Bloomberg, I will not vote for the man and we will get Obama deserving every damnation…

And if McCain is that stupid, he deserves to lose. Michael Bloomberg is a smarter form of left leaning scum. Might as well pick George Soros to be your running mate John.

And I can virtually guarantee every Conservative worth his salt will think the same.

  5. Guy

The idea of Michael Bloomberg as V.P. scares the crap out of me! This ultra-wealthy elitist is a complete gun control Nazi. Those of you who value the 2nd Amendment as I do, should be equally pissed off. If McCain picks this asshole, I might just vote for Osama bin Jerkoff or whatever his name is. Maybe America deserves to be bitch-slapped into a depression rather than voting for these Loads! Bar-rat Omamma will make Jimmy Carter look like freaking Ronald Reagan by the time his presidency is over (1 Term) and Americans will see that their idealistic view of the world was completely wrong. Then we can get an Ass-kicker in there like Teddy Roosevelt!

  10. Old

I’m afraid I agree. This is the worst choice he could possibly make. Bloomberg is not even a middle-of-the-roader; he is a leftist mascerading as a Republican. I will vote for McCain no matter what, but I could understand if others did not.

  11. Bill Smith

    A Democrat — yes, I know — for a running mate?!!!!

This tells me he doesn’t have confidence in his positions, OR in the voters.

    BAD idea, John.

McVAIN THE INSANE, HAS DONE IT AGAIN,
AROUND OUR NECKS IS THIS MANCHURIAN BANE,
THIS LITTLE MUNCHKIN WITH THE EVIL FROWN,

PUT US OUT OF OUR MISERY, END THE PAIN.

  13. Will

If he wants a moderate that will tie up the Jewish vote, he should go for Lieberman, definitely NOT Bloomberg.

  14. Zeke Eagle

Fuck moderation and Moderates! All the forces of evil seem to pushing us to armed revolution. If you want peace prepare for war.

This slithering pack of “use you” politicians have got to learn that there are consequences for screwing Americans. It occurred to me today that if our founders came back they would hang all 535 members of Congress for treason.

Juan McCain must select a genuine, such as Romney, who has impressive financial credentials. Duncan Hunter would be better but he’s too honest to associate with McAmnesty.

  15. Kurt(the infidel)

he better not pick Bloomberg. man this will piss me off

  16. Jeff

“Bloomberg has attacked social conservatives on immigration calling their stance unrealistic, “We’re not going to deport 12 million people, so let’s stop this fiction. Let’s give them permanent status…”It’s as if we expect border control agents to do what a century of communism could not: defeat the natural market forces of supply and demand… and defeat the natural human desire for freedom and opportunity. You might as well as sit in your beach chair and tell the tide not to come in.”

“Bloomberg is an avid supporter of gun control stating, “I don’t know why people carry guns. Guns kill people.”

“Bloomberg opposed the confirmation of John Roberts as Chief Justice of the United States.”
    ————————————————-

Just to list a few. I cannot support this bullshit, especially this slack-assed attitude towards border control/defense. This is a nation-killer. WTF is wrong with these people!?!?

He compares the open border with the cold war? We had thousands of nukes ready to fly on a moments notice during the cold war. We had millions of soldiers and sailors ready to whoop some ass during the cold war. That’s why we didn’t lose. We didn’t sit on our asses while the Ruskies took up residence next door. Let’s just throw the fucking gate open and what, pray nuke-packing goats don’t come? THEY WILL COME.

Time to go drown myself in these

Well, it figures. MacNasty is stupid enough to pick a liberal Kommiecrat if for no other reason then to poke Conservatives in the eye.

Well, I hope enough liberals switch to get him elected cause most Conservatives will be home getting drunk on election day

This election will be listed as the one born in hell….

  18. Boo Boo

This story looks like it was put out by Schoen, who is not impressive in the least. Bloomberg would not do anything for McCain except lose him GOP votes. Remember: this is supposed to be a GOP ticket, not a Dem mild ticket.

  19. Boo Boo

The Jew thing is stupid too: I didn’t even know he was a Jew, and oh yes, the Jews really banded together and supported Lieberman, didn’t they? This story smells like a dem spin job designed to throw repub’s off their footing. And it seems to be working.

  20. Will

Oh yeah without a doubt. I was just trying to make the point that Bloomberg was a big no no.

I don’t think Lieberman is that great of a choice either.

I think Palin or Huckabee would be good.

I would prefer Jindal but he’s pretty young. (Younger than Obama, but hella smarter)

  21. A. S. Wise- VA (George S. Patton Conservative)

I can only hope this is a rumor.

Save for McCain calling for the destruction of America at this point, putting Bloomberg on the ticket is the only other way I would stay home on election day.

  22. Mark

Bloomberg is at best a RINO: Republican in Name Only. He is in favor of taking away everyone’s guns, his a big spender, and there’s no way I could support the guy. McCain needs someone with economic bona fides, like Romney. I wish Romney had sounded as great on the campaign trail as he did when he called it quits. He sounded like Reagan when he threw in the towel. I’d prefer to see Romney, but knowing what a twit McCain can be, I’d at least like to see a real conservative. McCain is a conservative in the sense that he wants to whip the Islamo-nutjobs and take on the little dictator in Iran. I respect that and agree with his positions. But on economics, he’s a lightweight. And he is also unwilling to put gloves on Obama, who is an out and out Che Guevara marxist who’s “hope” is to tear down our country and culture and surrender. I was hoping Hillary would rip Obama up, but she backed off. McCain will need a surrogate attack dog in his Veep. Also, let’s be honest. The Veep will likely be the next president. McCain is a tough little cuss and is in great health, but he’s old as dirt, a real Methuselah (sic).

Let’s look for a tough female Republican governor, like the moose-eating babe from Alaska. Or perhaps the governor of South Carolina. And please, not my governator from California. And my favorite would be Romney, but there seems to be a bizarre anti-Mormon streak in the Republican party. I dont get it, as the guy is married to his first wife, has a big family, is hard working and totally clean cut. To me, Romney is a preseident from central casting.

Bloomberg will not win over many folks from NYC as voters. I don’t know what he brings other than a huge wallet. OK, sure, the Wall Street guys will like him.

Please, no, not Bloomberg. We have enough RINOs running around.

  23. Steve in NC

    and the nightmare continues

may just be staying home this November if this goes down, what the hell, after the global warming speech I was on thin ice anyway with him

  24. Professor Bill

If he names Bloomberg for VP I am not voting for him, period. Not that anyone cares what I think but I am not eating that shit sandwich. F-it.
