Coalition forces disrupt al-Qaeda extremist “court system” in Mosul
BAGHDAD – Coalition forces detained nine suspected terrorists, including the leader of an illegal terrorist court system, during operations in northern Iraq Tuesday and Wednesday.
During a precision operation in Mosul Wednesday, Coalition forces captured the alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq “emir” of an illegal terrorist court system designed to impose extremist ideology on Iraqi citizens. Detainee reporting also indicates the man is tied to AQI senior leaders in the city.
Using information from an operation June 5, Coalition forces detained a man in Bayji Tuesday while targeting members of an AQI bombing network in Salah ad-Din province.
Also Tuesday, Coalition forces continued to degrade the AQI foreign terrorist facilitation network. Operations in northwest Iraq netted five suspected terrorists, and in an operation near Samarra, Coalition forces detained two suspects.
“These operations in northern Iraq today and yesterday are part of ongoing efforts to disrupt terrorists’ networks and degrade their ability to impose a corrupt ideology on the people of Iraq,” said Navy Lt. David Russell, MNFI spokesman.
