Check out William Russell For Congress

JOHNSTOWN, CAMBRIA COUNTY — Campaign 2008 is heating up, and it’s not just the presidential TV ads that are getting attention.

Republican William Russell barely made it on to this year’s ballot. A successful write-in campaign in the primaries earned him a spot on the GOP ticket. Now he says he’s ready to go head to head with political powerhouse John Murtha.

Over the weekend, Russell officially opened his campaign office in Johnstown; an area commonly described as a Murtha stronghold.

“Certainly this is an area that has experienced a great deal of the benefits of his earmarks, and also a great deal of the detriments of those,” Russell said.

Russell says he’s staunchly opposed to congressional earmarks, and would like to see the region’s economy supported by the private sector. The retired Army Lt. Col. supports developing coal and natural gas reserves in Pennsylvania. And in his TV ads, he calls for an apology from Murtha, after the democrat publicly excoriating marines accused of murdering Iraqi women and children in Haditha.

“If Mr. Murtha were so in touch with our men and women serving in uniform, we should have heard as equally public and sincere apology to each and every one of those marines, and it has never happened,” Russell said.

So far seven of the eight marines involved have been cleared of any wrongdoing. When asked in August about the possibility of issuing apologies, Murtha dodged the issue.

“There were 23 innocent people, women and children killed. It’s right now under judicial review, so we’ll wait until that’s over with before we have any other comments,” Murtha said.

The last marine still facing charges, Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich, is currently awaiting trial. He’s filed a defamation lawsuit against Murtha for his remarks.

When asked about the advertisement, Murtha spokesperson Matthew Mazonkey issued a written statement.

“This election is about creating jobs, strengthening our economy, and finding solutions to our energy needs. And on these issues, Congressman Murtha is leading the fight both nationally and throughout our region,” the statement read.

I have no problem with “earmarks” as long as the entire congress or at least a committee of Congress agrees that the project is worthy of taxpayer dollars.

Those that are snuck in under the radar at the last minute, and nobody votes on it except in ignorance are usually the worst kind, like a museum for “x” that has no use whatsoever except for spending some money in a certain congressperson’s district and giving someone a job.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that this is the same thing that McCain has been saying as well. He is not against all earmarks; just the ones no one votes on or are attached to a bill at the last minute and almost no one knows about until the money is spent.

I think all candidates for Congress or the Presidency should distinguish which earmarks they support and which they oppose. All earmarks are not pork-barrel.

I would add that I want ALL ear-marks, no matter how small or for whom, to be listed on a publicly-available website that documents (1) how much, (2) for whom, and (3) which Rep/Senator requested it.

Complete and total fiscal transparency, NOW!

  3. Goodbye Natalie

If there is one skank I would like to see first eliminated from Congress, and then from the face of the earth (just so he know he went out an earthly loser before becoming an eternal one), it’s John Murtha.

Murtha is as despicable as they come. On Murtha’s best day, he’s worse than Kerry.

    Murtha has lost his mind…

  6. Vowel_Movement

The Office of Management and Budget aka [OMB] has such a website listing all the past and proposed ear-Marks and who got them and how much. State by State ect. it takes a lot of searching and clicking but in the end you see who’s hand was greased with how much of YOUR money and for what .
    Go to:

    http://earmarks.omb.gov/

    2009 appropriations Tracking

    http://earmarks.omb.gov/2009-appropriations-by-spendcom/summary.html

This one is BIG and it is up to you to see if the money is spent well. Remember this is Government and 100 means one Hundred Thousand dollars for something or another. It is one of the smaller sums. $100K

Awesome powerful add. I think Murtha is a typical commie democrat that needs to be outed for what he truly is!! A Piece of ****. Treason is the only other word that comes to mind!!!!

  8. cllucas

It’s hard to fathom. He’s no shit decorated, he actually served…what kind of insanity effects a man such that he’d make himself an “EX-Marine”?

  9. Kim

To be a successful write-in says so much about the temperment of the folks in Pennsylvania. I’m also hearing Obama and McCain are tied in the favorability polls there.

Perhaps the folks of Pennsylvania are tired of the old DemoRAT party and are truly ready for a change!!

  10. TBinSTL (just typical)

In his district, Murtha rules by the grace of the local unions. That area is wrapped so tight around the dicks of the unions, its not even funny. I don’t know that it will be fixable there. I sure hope so.
